Move-in day at the University of Arizona feels like it’s right around the corner. It can be exciting – and overwhelming. That’s why we’ve put together the ultimate college dorm checklist – complete with what to bring, what not to bring, and how to make your dorm room feel like home.
The University of Arizona has 23 on-campus dorms that come in all shapes and sizes. Each residence hall gets you closer to the people and resources that will help you succeed as a college student.
Finding your “home away from home” on campus is one of the best parts of being a Wildcat. You’ll make new friends, tons of memories, and enjoy all the action our beautiful campus has to offer.
Although each dorm is unique and offers a variety of amenities, University of Arizona Housing will supply your dorm with all the necessities.
• Twin XL size bed and mattress (some dorms offer full-size beds)
• Desk with chair
• Closet or wardrobe
• Dresser
• Trash can and recycle bin
• The cost of your dorm also covers utilities like electricity, heating and cooling, and Wi-Fi.
Your college dorm essentials include items you’ll use on a daily basis and little extras to make your space feel like home.
• Clothing hangers and a hamper (more on laundry below)
• Desk lamp and/or floor lamp
• Mirror
• Organizers
• Pictures, posters, and other wall art
• Pillows and bedding (bonus points if it’s Wildcat gear!)
• A shower curtain, towels, and bath mat (if you don’t have a communal bathroom)
• Reusable dishes, silverware, and water bottle
• TV
• Cleaning supplies like all-purpose spray or antibacterial wipes
• Utensils and anything else you might need to dine

There are tons of amenities and resources you’ll enjoy in our dorms. You’ll have access to laundry facilities (pay-per-use laundry facilities), community kitchens, recreation rooms, study spaces, mail service, water-filling stations, ice machines, and more. Vacuums, pots and pans, rec equipment, and movies are available to borrow for free from the front desk.
You’re allowed to bring one mini fridge and microwave (get the specifications here). However, you can also rent a Microfridge – a refrigerator and microwave combo unit – for the academic year.
If you’re assigned a roommate, consider talking with them to decide who’s bringing what. Got a TV you can share? Great, maybe they can bring the microwave. To make sure all goes smoothly on Wildcat Move-In Day, have an open and honest conversation prior to moving into the dorms about your interests, dorm room organization and setup, class schedule, and preferred routine.
Safety is our top priority, and if you plan on living in the dorms students must follow the Policies for Dorm Living. That means you shouldn’t pack potentially dangerous or bulky items like:
• Bed risers
• Candles
• Cooking equipment (toaster, waffle iron, instant pots and/or air fryers)
• Full-sized refrigerators
• Halogen lamps
• Space heaters
• Wireless or wired routers
There are several other items listed on the University of Arizona move-in guide. Be sure to review thoroughly before you begin your college dorm room setup.
Between the big stuff – like bedding, electronics, and clothes – it’s easy to forget the small, everyday dorm room essentials that make a big difference once you're settled in. Here's a list of often-overlooked must-haves to pack for your University of Arizona dorm room:
• Extension cords and power strips
• Hand sanitizer
• Laundry detergent and stain treatment
• Mini first-aid kit
• Sewing kit
• Notebook and pens
• Shower caddy
• Shower sandals
• Small fan
• Air purifier
• Toilet paper
Your dorm is more than just a place to crash – it’s your personal space to study, relax, recharge, and connect. The more comfortable and functional it feels, the more you'll enjoy day-to-day life on campus. Here are some pro tips on how to make your space work for you:
• Bring comfy bedding (twin XL sheets, blankets, a mattress topper) to turn your dorm bed into a cozy retreat after long days.
• A white noise machine or sound app can help mask distractions and make it easier to fall asleep (just be sure to run it by your roommate first).
• Set up a dedicated space with good lighting and supplies for those late-night study sessions.
• Add organizers or desk drawers to keep things tidy and stress-free.
• Bring a comfy floor cushion, extra seating, or beanbag so friends have a place to hang out.
Creating a dorm room that reflects your personality while supporting your academic, social, and wellness goals will help you feel right at home on campus. Small touches can make a big impact on how much you enjoy your first year at the University of Arizona.
