How to Find an On-Campus Job

Learn more about on-campus jobs at the University of Arizona

My name is Malia Daft, and I'm a sophomore majoring in communication and minoring in marketing. I have been working as a student content assistant in the Campus Brand Engagement department on campus for the past year. It's been a rewarding experience, and I'm here to tell you about how easy it is to have the flexibility and convenience of an on-campus job!

Why I Chose an On-Campus Job

As a student, I found my perfect job through Handshake. I was looking for an opportunity that not only excited me but fit in with my busy schedule. As a college student, I am balancing classes, Greek life, and work, but I wouldn't change any of it based on how much hands-on experience I have gained from my job as a student content assistant.

Some examples of things I’ve done at my job include:

  • Creating content for the University's digital channels, such as the University of Arizona’s admissions website and social media platforms.
  • Drafting editions of the weekly Bear Down Rundown email newsletter.
  • Creating a list of trending resources for topical University-related people, places, etc.
  • Generating ideas to help shape the voice and tone of student-focused marketing material.

Lamley Andrews is a geoscience sophomore who works as an on-campus assistant video editor for the marketing and communications department. "Personally, the biggest benefit is the flexibility. My boss and colleagues quickly adjust assignments if they don't work for me because they know I'm a student first, so they allow me to prioritize that."

Why did I want an on-campus job?

I didn't have my car on campus for the first two years of school, so my job options were limited to walking distance from my dorm. I was also looking for something that would benefit me in the long run with skills to apply to my future career, so I narrowed my focus to marketing-related opportunities. I also knew that with an on-campus job came managers who wanted the best for me while I worked there and prioritized my growth and development so that when I graduate, I have the real-world knowledge I need to succeed.

The Benefits of a Campus Job

There are so many benefits to having an on-campus job. Not only are the opportunities endless, but you are directly on campus, making it an easy commute if you live nearby. Some of the other benefits include:

  • Flexible scheduling
  • Skill development
  • Networking opportunities
  • Financial support (work-study)
  • Resume building
  • Potential course credits
