Arizona 100 and Counting: A Celebration, Through the Lens of Time
The University of Arizona observes the 100th anniversary of Arizona’s statehood with Arizona 100: A Celebration, Through the Lens of Time on February 11, 2012, 3-5 p.m., in Centennial Hall on the university campus.
This FREE showcase is presented by the UA’s Colleges of Letters, Arts and Science (CLAS).
The four colleges in CLAS – Humanities, Fine Arts, Science, and Social and Behavioral Sciences – will showcase a collaborative approach to bringing Arizona’s past, present and future to life on the stage. Through the multiple lenses of their disciplines, the colleges’ faculty and students will present the people and places who shaped our state’s rich history and building its future.
Directed by College of Fine Arts Dean Jory Hancock, the program will be a live collage of visual and auditory experiences. Brief segments – about six minutes each – will cover everything from mini-lectures about anthropology, history, poetry, tree-ring research, natural history, and astronomy, to the sights and sounds of Arizona’s past, present and future. Audiences also will enjoy everything from academic insights to Mexican corridos to modern dance for a lively, fresh and engaging look at Arizona.
Both members of the UA and greater Tucson communities will participate in the afternoon’s festivities. Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and UA President Eugene Sander will welcome the audience and the Tucson Girls Chorus and the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus will add their voices to the UA Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Choir.
