by Don Cowen
This beautiful and unique glass sculpture
stands outside the front entrance to the
Optical Sciences Center. The sculpture was
created as the result of an accident in the
Optical Sciences laboratory. The artist, Don
Cowen, was trying to split a glass disk to
make a lens when the disk "exploded" into
multiple fragments. The artist mounted
several pieces in a steel frame to fabricate
this sculpture. The Artist never named the
piece and will not tell admirers what it
represents to him. "It is as many things to
as many people . . . " Cowen worked for
The University of Arizona Optical Sciences
center from 1965 to 1983. Cowen also
painted a mural relating the history of
science in the Flandrau Planetarium.
