Abbas Tuli's African roots infuse his scientific research and his campus activities. He came to the UA as a Regent's scholar in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics and a member of the Honors College. His undergraduate research in molecular genetics focused on an inherited type of albinism prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, where the highest incidence is in his homeland of Tanzania. Out of the laboratory, he’s a founder of the African American Students' Association, treasurer of Caring for the Advancement of Refugee Education and active member of the African Students' Association. Graduating with one of the UA's highest honors - the Robert Logan Nugent Medal - he plans to study public health, complete a medical degree and return to Tanzania.
