Show Off Your Musical Talent in the UA Symphonic Band

Ever think about dragging out that old trumpet that's been collecting dust under your bed since high school? You might want to consider joining the University of Arizona's Symphonic Band, which will be holding auditions the first two days of classes.

Auditions for the band – which is open to all students and employees – will be held by appointment on Aug. 23-24. Audition materials are available online, so if you're feeling a little rusty, now's the time to start practicing.

Most of the student musicians in the Symphonic Band are nonmusic majors, representing a variety of departments on campus, said Robert Bayless, assistant music professor and director of the band. 

"It's a strange but kind of wonderful conglomeration," he said.

Many of the 70 to 80 band members are UA students who played an instrument in high school and want to continue to play for fun in college, Bayless said. Others are campus employees looking for a creative outlet outside the daily grind.  read more »
