Professors Take Fast Track From Anesthesiology to Auto Racing

You might say their careers have some extra octane.

When they're not teaching or caring for patients, C. Mark Bazzell and Susan K. Bazzell both UA assistant professors of anesthesiology, are pursuing a passion for auto racing.

They can be found on tracks in Arizona and Nevada, and recently were a husband-and-wife team of trackside physicians – "pit docs" – at the annual Formula 1 Grand Prix of Canada in Montreal.

"We are pit docs for the Canadian Grand Prix each June and work either in a rescue vehicle which goes onto the track at the site of a crash and retrieves the injured pilot (driver) in an ambulance, which conveys the pilot to the onsite track hospital, or in a transport helicopter to the local hospital," explains Mark.
