Parking Director Hikes Part of Appalachian Trail
Imagine hiking 175 miles. Now imagine doing it in two weeks. Over mountainous terrain, alone for the first 140 miles. And imagine starting the trek by climbing 2,500 stairs.
That's exactly how University of Arizona Parking & Transportation Services Director David Heineking spent the end of June and beginning of July.
He began the fulfillment of a lifelong dream to hike the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail by hiking a portion that runs from Georgia into North Carolina, with the state line marked by a wooden plaque nailed to a tree.
Growing up in Ohio, Heineking was around 13 or 14 years old when an older kid in his Boy Scout troop turned 18 and went off to hike the Appalachian Trail.
"Since then, it's just something I've always wanted to do," he said.
