Decades ago, there was nothing quite like a good, homemade Halloween costume to transform neighborhood children from their usual cheery selves into ghosts, vampires, witches and werewolves.
Over time, Halloween costumes began to include beloved superheroes and treasured cartoon characters.
Eventually, Halloween superstores began to spring up every year in vacant storefronts, like so many seasonal hermit crabs hoping to corner the consumer market for a month or two, hawking everything from monster makeup to rainbow-colored clown hair.
But what of those simpler times, when we were still kids on a budget?
