El Tour Full of Thrills (and Spills) for AHSC Employees

Every year, El Tour de Tucson draws thousands of cyclists from across the nation and the globe to traverse the Old Pueblo on two wheels.

The University's Arizona Health Sciences Center was well-represented in this year's race, which was sponsored by The University of Arizona Medical Center.

"It's the quintessential Tucson event. And if you survive it, it's a great feeling at the end," said Dr. Brent Barber, pediatric cardiologist and associate professor in the department of pediatrics, who completed the full 111-mile ride on Nov. 19.

Barber is an El Tour veteran who won the event's 80-mile ride in 2007. This year, he opted to do the whole 111 miles on a fixed-gear bike, which requires constant pedaling with no coasting, "just for fun."
