Art Aloud Showcases Creative Side of AHSC

Michael Simmons was looking at his new baby girl one early morning when inspiration hit. The proud father took pen to paper, likening his daughter's beauty to that of a desert sunset. Not long after, he shared his original poem with students and colleagues at the monthly Art Aloud showcase in the Arizona Health Sciences Library.

Simmons, a surgical technician in the University of Arizona Department of Surgery, was one of about 10 people to read at a recent Art Aloud open mic event at the library's Java City coffee shop.

Held once a month, Art Aloud is offered through the UA College of Medicine's Program in Medical Humanities. It was started about four years ago to give the Arizona Health Sciences Center community a time-out from the daily grind, said Nancy Coleman, Art Aloud director.
