Chemistry

Chemistry may be described as the science of matter. Primarily an experimental science, it includes research areas in chemical synthesis and analysis; chemical dynamics and instrumentation; and structural, quantum, solid-state, and polymer chemistry. Chemistry is often referred to as the central science, in that it provides gateways into the study of biology, medicine, geological sciences, and many areas of engineering. The department provides both general and professional training, giving a strong foundation for careers in many different sciences. There are numerous opportunities for independent research. Areas of specialization in chemistry include: analytical, organic, inorganic, physical, and biochemistry (a separate major). Because of overlapping requirements, a chemistry/biochemistry double major is one of the easiest double programs to complete. Most chemistry majors minor in math and physics to meet to math/physics requirements. The BS degree meets the professional requirements of the American Chemical Society. A teaching major is also offered, leading to certification to teach in Arizona public schools.
