Family Studies and Human Development

The division of Family Studies and Human Development (FSHD) provides more than just a curriculum for its majors. Students have the opportunity to enhance their classroom learning through involvement in a variety of non-classroom experiences, faculty-supervised research experiences, and student organizations such as the FSHD Ambassadors and the Family Studies Student Round Table (FSSRT). One hallmark of the FSHD undergraduate program is an emphasis on hands-on work experience. Classroom knowledge is supplemented through supervised internships in a variety of settings that include social service agencies, schools, mental health organizations, hospitals, and retirement homes. Experiences such as staffing a crisis hot line, teaching parenting skills, or facilitating a divorce support group for children allow students to explore future careers, gain valuable experience, and provide vital outreach to the community. These experiences help FSHD majors prepare to pursue careers and graduate training in fields such as human services, social policy, community and public health, counseling, social work, medicine, gerontology, and family law.
