At the UA, students reach their fullest potential through internships, externships, on-campus jobs, and research opportunities. Kaitlin Charette – who recently received the nationally competitive American Association of University Women (AAUW) Career Development Grant –is one example of how 100% Engagement makes our cats the best.

An Honors College student, Kaitlin transferred to the UA to pursue a second undergraduate degree in nutritional sciences. When Kaitlin was on the hunt for scholarships, she came across the AAUW grant and decided to apply despite its competiveness.

“I knew there would be a lot of competition because it’s a nationally competitive scholarship but I just thought it was so neat that hopefully I had a shot,” said Kaitlin.

The AAUW’s mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. After reviewing the grant application requirements, Kaitlin felt like she was a perfect fit.

One of the things that helped push Kaitlin's application to the top of the AAUW's list was her involvement with on and off-campus activities. Kaitlin believes that joining clubs on campus is a great way to learn new skills, develop friendships, and demonstrate leadership.

“I am Vice President of the UA Nutritional Science Club, which is a really cool club—we volunteer a lot in the community and focus on career development within the field of nutritional sciences,” said Kaitlin.

And now, thanks to the grant, Kaitlin plans to get even more involved. Kaitlin says the grant will help make her “a really good candidate for a dietetic internship and I won't have to accrue any more debt.”

So what else does Kaitlin see in her future? She’d like to become a registered dietitian in the area of community nutrition, specifically with Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), a federal program that provides support to low-income women and children who are at nutritional risk. Kaitlin seems well on her way to achieving her dreams, and landing a job as an RD will be no problem for this well-rounded Wildcat!
