Welcome from President Sander

Gene Sander, 20th President of the University of Arizona

The UA holds a very special place in my heart and I am confident that as you learn more about the UA, you will feel the same way. Welcome to the University of Arizona.

The University of Arizona is the leading public research university in the American Southwest, and is ranked among the premier universities in the world.

With 39,000 students enrolled in more than 300 degree programs – from medicine to dance, engineering to optics – UA offers some of the highest quality academics in the country.  This fall we have the largest, smartest, most diverse class in UA history and we are going to ensure they have the best college experience in America.

Our research portfolio continues to expand – last year our faculty generated more than $600 million in research grants, making the UA one of the nation’s premier public research universities.  Recently our scientists with the Lunar and Planetary lab were awarded an $800 million multi-year grant to orbit and explore an asteroid that may offer clues to the origin of life.

As the state’s land grant university, we honor our commitment to ensure that discoveries made here serve the state first, then improve the lives of people around the world.

This is an exceptional place to learn, to grow, to discover.  I have spent my lifetime in higher education and can say without a doubt that we have some of the finest faculty in the world. We will continue to attract the best and brightest faculty members to inspire students in classrooms and in research labs across campus.

It is the highest honor of my career to be able to lead this great university.  The UA holds a very special place in my heart and I am confident that as you learn more about the UA, you will feel the same way.  Welcome to the University of Arizona.
